Best Movie Robots

“I’m consciousness. I’m alive. I’m Chappie.”
-Chappie in the film Chappie

On March 5, 2015 a new robot comes to town. His name is Chappie and he’s more than just a mindless drone. Chappie is an android that has the ability to think and feel for himself.

The film is directed by Neil Blomkamp (District 9) and stars Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, and Sharlto Copley as the titular robot. Aksarben Cinema is excited to invite the latest science fiction adventure from Blomkamp.

In celebration of Chappie and robots of cinema we have compiled a list of the five best movie robots. Let us know if you agree with our choices in the comments!

1.     C-3PO & R2-D2

The first robot on our list is actually a duo of mechanical minds, because you simply can’t have one without the other on a list of the best robots. C-3PO and R2-D2 launched the idea of robots with personality into the stratosphere following their arrival in Star Wars. No robots perfectly capture a conflicted friendship better than these two.

2.     Gort

Gort is one of the genuine robotic articles who made his first appearance in The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). He’s an eight-foot tall metal robot who accompanies an alien named Klaatu. Gort is not much of a talker, but does possess a laser weapon that shoots from a visor. Gort originally was constructed using thick foam rubber, but you’d never guess it looking at what looks like a solid metal being.

3.     Wall-E

How about a robot that is not fussy or deadly? Wall-E is the cutest little trash-mashing robot we ever did see and he’s a movie fan so he’s alright in our book. Ben Burtt, best known for creating amazing space fantasy sounds for Star Wars, provided the voice for the lovable sentient being.

4.     Maria

Finally, none of these robots would exist without the original movie robot, Maschinenmensch, or Maria for short. The original title of this robot is German for machine-human and she comes from the German film Metropolis directed by Fritz Lang. Maria was played by actress Brigitte Helm who wore a “plastic wood” costume.

Wow! So many great robots have graced our cinemas from Threepio to Maria and Wall-E to Gort, these sentient beings have been an equal part of our movie history as their great creators. Time will tell if Chappie will stand the test of time and become the next great movie robot. Remember to find out for yourself when Chappie comes to Aksarben Cinema on March 5, 2015.
