Wild

“I get lonely. I’m lonelier in my real life than out here.”
-Cheryl Strayed, Wild

In the film Wild, Reese Witherspoon stars as Cheryl Strayed, the real-life inspiration for the film and writer of the original memoir. The film is directed by Jean-Marc Valée and tells the story of Strayed as she performs a 1,100 mile solo hike after a traumatic moment in her life.

Tina Jordan, Entertainment Weekly
“Good adaptations always add another dimension to a beloved book, or make you see something you'd missed while you were reading. In this case, it's a fuller sense of Strayed herself, thanks to the way Valée manages to convey her howling, bottomless-seeming grief.”

Mark Jenkins, NPR
“As Cheryl's upbeat and ‘unsophisticated’ mom, Bobbi, Laura Dern is the only supporting player who matters. Bobbi is Cheryl's true soul mate, and only becomes more so as a late-blooming student of feminism and women's literature.”

Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal
“Reese Witherspoon is the angry, wounded soul of Wild. She commands the screen throughout her heroine’s 1,100-mile journey of self-discovery and self-repair, on foot and mostly alone, from the Mojave desert to Washington State along the Pacific Crest Trail. It’s a sensational performance, by far the best one of her career.”

A.O. Scott, The New York Times
“The structure of Wild is as complicated as its themes. The ‘action’ on the trail — walking, thinking, pitching the tent at night and packing it up in the morning — is punctuated by looping reminiscences of the life that preceded it. What is most audacious about the film, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club) from a screenplay by Nick Hornby, is how closely it follows and how fully it respects Ms. Strayed’s free-associative, memory-driven narrative.”
